What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8 THC) is cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, though it occurs naturally in very small amounts. It’s chemically similar to Delta-9 THC (the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana) but with a slightly different molecular structure, leading to milder effects. Delta-8 has gained popularity as a legal alternative to Delta-9 in many areas, derived from hemp.
How Delta-8 THC is Produced
Delta-8 THC is rarely extracted directly from cannabis or hemp plants because it’s present in such trace quantities—typically less than 1%. Instead, it’s primarily manufactured through a synthetic process called isomerization, where cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from legal hemp (containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC) is converted into Delta-8 THC. This involves treating CBD isolate with an acid (such as acetic acid or hydrochloric acid) under controlled conditions of heat and time, which rearranges the molecular bonds to form Delta-8. The basic formula is often described as “CBD + acid + time = Delta-8 THC,” but the process requires precise lab conditions to minimize byproducts like Delta-9 THC or other isomers. Hemp-derived CBD is the starting material to keep it federally compliant. This lab-based production has made Delta-8 widely available.
Delta-8 THC interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, binding to CB1 receptors in the brain and nervous system, much like Delta-9 THC, but it’s generally reported to be about 50-70% as potent. This results in a smoother, less intense experience compared to traditional marijuana. Users often describe it as providing clear-headed without the overwhelming effects sometimes associated with Delta-9.
Effects typically onset within 30-90 minutes when ingested (longer for edibles) and can last 4-8 hours, depending on dosage, method of consumption, and individual factors like metabolism and tolerance. Always consult a healthcare provider, especially if you have underlying conditions or are on medications.
How Delta-8 THC is Used in Products
Delta-8 THC is versatile and incorporated into a wide array of consumer products. These are typically infused with Delta-8 distillate, a concentrated form derived from the synthesis process. Here’s a breakdown of common formats:
• Edibles and Gummies: One of the most popular options, like fruit-flavored gummies, chocolates, brownies, or cereal bars. They provide discreet, long-lasting effects (up to 8 hours) but take longer to kick in (1-2 hours). Dosages range from 10-50mg per piece.
• Vapes and Cartridges: Inhalable products like vape pens, cartridges, or disposable vapes offer fast onset (5-15 minutes) and precise dosing. Flavors include strains like Ice Cream Cake or fruity blends, with effects lasting 1-3 hours. Popular for on-the-go use but carry risks like lung irritation.
• Tinctures and Oils: Liquid extracts taken sublingually (under the tongue) for quick absorption (15-45 minutes). They’re flavorless or flavored, easy to dose with droppers, and ideal for microdosing throughout the day.
• Other Formats: Includes capsules for precise oral dosing, topicals like creams for localized pain relief (non-psychoactive when applied to skin).
Products are often blended with other cannabinoids like CBD or HHC for enhanced effects. Always check third-party lab testing for purity, potency, and contaminants, as the market can vary in quality.
